Knights Do It Again

Holy Trinity Knights capped a wonderful season by retaining their Hazlemere Sixes crown on a glorious sunny Saturday at the Rec. Having already secured league and cup runners up medals this season, the Knights finally got their hands on a trophy to reward their efforts throughout the year.

Knights winners 1Just like last year, two Knights teams were entered into the tournament and again both teams played terrific football. Knights Blues were unlucky to lose their opening game 1-0 to a strong KCA County team but won their next game 2-1 against Holmer Green with two goals from captain Tomas Lipinski before succumbing to a very powerful Holy Family Saints team.

Meanwhile in the other group, Knights Reds campaign was being masterminded by coach Sanj Sharma. They started with a 2-1 victory against HT Mariners in a game where the score-line belied the Knights dominance – Oliver Baldwin scored both goals. This was followed by a 1-0 win over KCA Orient with Toby Bennett getting the winner with Jonah Sharma & Oli Stonehouse outstanding in defence. Unfortunately in this game Knights lost silky striker Daniel Holmes to injury, leaving the squad down to just 6 fit players who could have no rest. In their final group game against Holy Family Cardinals the Reds again dominated but couldn’t break the deadlock and were punished by a late Cards winner.

Despite this the Reds topped their group to face KCA County in the semi which turned out to be a very close game in which neither team could score – just like last years’ semi, penalties beckoned! After two penalties apiece Oliver Baldwin was the only player to have scored – Knights keeper Kaelan Oldham made two fantastic saves to give Toby the chance to send Knights through to the final, exactly as he did 12 months previously. Same player, same result as Toby drilled his kick into the net sending the Knights crowd into delirium!

Knights winners 2Waiting for Knights in the final were Holy Family Saints who had won our league, remaining unbeaten all season. The Knights squad however were filled with desire and determination and in the final continued playing the outstanding football that they had shown throughout the tournament, cheered on by parents, grandparents and the classy Mariners crowd who like last year added their much appreciated vocal support in the HT cause! Halfway through the first half, a nice pass from Toby set Adam Hutchinson free on the left. Adam cut in and struck a shot which was parried by the keeper only for Oliver to crash in his 21st goal of the season to give the Knights something to hang on to. They did more than hang on though, creating more good chances whilst also needing Kaelan, Jonah & Oli to stay strong at the back which they did, securing another clean sheet to win the cup!

At the final whistle cue scenes of jubilation and mass player bundle before the boys received their trophies and skipper Jonah picked up the cup from former Wycombe legend Keith Scott (pictured centre back row with the victorious squad).

A magnificent end to a brilliant season for the ever-improving Knights.
