Rangers Roar To Bring Home Tigers Cup

HT Rangers 2-2 Chalfont St Peter (AET – Rangers won 3-2 on penalties)

Rangers Cup winSaturday 4th May saw Holy Trinity Rangers (U10s) win the Tigers Cup after a nail-biting encounter against Chalfont St Peter U10s.  This was the first time that HTJFC had won this trophy since 2001-02 season, so long overdue!  Not being in the same league as the opposition, we had little idea of what to expect, but it was clear from the off that this game was going to be no walkover for either team – both sides had well-organised defences and attacked in numbers, so it was little surprise that this went right to the wire.

After a nervy start, Rangers got into their stride and with Toby Chapman mopping up a lot of the ball in midfield and Freddie Richardson asking plenty of questions up front, they started to look like the side most likely to score.  The first goal came 5 minutes before half-time – Toby Chapman’s throw-in was headed back to him by Ben Lodge, Toby went outside a defender before curling a shot to the back post which hit the woodwork and just squeezed over the line before the goalkeeper could catch it – thank goodness for an alert linesman!  The second half saw Rangers hold their own and hunt for the second goal to make the game safer, however it never came – a couple of Jack Farmer free-kicks went close, and Jacob Small nearly stabbed the ball home after a free-kick but it stayed 1-0 until the last couple of minutes.  Chalfont realised time was running out and launched a wave of attacks towards the end of the match with Rangers unable to clear their lines effectively.  A late corner came in and the ball was headed home at the back post to take the game into 10 minutes of extra time.

The pressure and the intensity were upped in the additional period but Rangers seemed to settle quicker and after a quick flowing move, Freddie Richardson‘s blocked shot was rammed home at the back post by Louie Mangan.  Not quite home and dry yet though, as just a few minutes later, Chalfont leveled for a second time, following some hesitation in the Rangers defence.  Both sides hung on to take it to the dreaded penalty shoot-out.

Rangers Cup win 317Captain Ben Lodge, Jack Farmer and Freddie Richardson were chosen to take the three spot-kicks for Rangers, however Chalfont went first.  SAVED – by the ever vigilant Jonathan Herath in goal!  Ben and Jack scored theirs as did the other two Chalfont players.  Lastly, up stepped Freddie – top goal-scorer this season for Rangers – who blasted the ball home cueing scenes of great delight amongst Rangers’ players and supporters.

A really memorable day and considering that this was the first time that all but one of these players had experienced playing in a cup final, they performed superbly as a squad and demonstrated a great team togetherness throughout against a determined Chalfont side.
